چکیده

Sublimation from the seasonal snowpack was calculated using the aerodynamic pro®le method at Niwot Ridge in the Colorado Front Range. Past studies of sublimation from snow have been inconclusive in determining both the rate and timing of the transfer of water between the snowpack and the atmosphere, primarily because they relied on one-dimensional measurements of turbulent ̄uxes or short term data sets. We calculated latent heat ̄uxes at ten minute intervals based on measurements of temperature, relative humidity and wind speed at heights of 0.5 m, 1.0 m and 2.0 m above the snowpack for nine months during the 1994±1995 snow season. The meteorological instruments were raised or lowered daily to maintain a constant height above the snow surface. At each ten minute time step, the latent heat ̄uxes were converted directly into millimeters of sublimation or condensation. Total net sublimation for the snow season was 195 mm of water equivalent, or 15% of maximum snow accumulation at the study site. The majority of this sublimation occurred during the snow accumulation season. Monthly losses to sublimation during the fall and winter ranged from 27 to 54 mm of water equivalent. The snowmelt season fromMay through mid-July showed net condensation to the snowpack ranging from 5 to 16 mm of water equivalent. Sublimation was sometimes episodic in nature, but often showed a diurnal periodicity with higher rates of sublimation during the day. Copyright # 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Ozone uptake to the polar snowpack at Summit, Greenland

The uptake of atmospheric ozone to the polar, year-round snowpack on glacial ice was studied at Summit, Greenland during three experiments in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Ozone was measured at up to three depths in the snowpack, on the surface, and above the surface at three heights on a tower along with supporting meteorological parameters. Ozone in interstitial air decreased with depth, albeit ozone...

Estimating sublimation of intercepted and sub-canopy snow using eddy covariance systems

Direct measurements of winter water loss due to sublimation were made in a sub-alpine forest in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Above-and below-canopy eddy covariance systems indicated substantial losses of winter-season snow accumulation in the form of snowpack (0Ð41 mm d 1) and intercepted snow (0Ð71 mm d 1) sublimation. The partitioning between these over and under story components of water...

Isotopic Evidence for Lateral Flow and Diffusive Transport, but Not Sublimation, in a Sloped Seasonal Snowpack, Idaho, USA

Oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in snow were measured in weekly profiles during the growth and decline of a sloped subalpine snowpack, southern Idaho, 2011–2012. Isotopic steps (10‰, δO; 80‰, δD) were preserved relative to physical markers throughout the season, albeit with some diffusive smoothing. Melting stripped off upper layers without shifting isotopes within the snowpack. Meltwater is in is...

Ice core evidence of rapid air temperature increases since 1960 in alpine areas of the Wind River Range, Wyoming, United States

[1] Site-specific transfer functions relating delta oxygen 18 (dO) values in snow to the average air temperature (TA) during storms on Upper Fremont Glacier (UFG) were used in conjunction with dO records from UFG ice cores to reconstruct long-term trends in air temperature from alpine areas in the Wind River Range, Wyoming. Transfer functions were determined by using data collected from four se...

A Distributed Snow-Evolution Modeling System (SnowModel)

SnowModel is a spatially distributed snow-evolution modeling system designed for application in landscapes, climates, and conditions where snow occurs. It is an aggregation of four submodels: MicroMet defines meteorological forcing conditions, EnBal calculates surface energy exchanges, SnowPack simulates snow depth and water-equivalent evolution, and SnowTran-3D accounts for snow redistribution...
